Weekly – Cyber Tip: Tailgating

Tailgating in cybersecurity is when someone follows an authorized person into a secure area without having their own access. It is like sneaking in behind someone who has opened a door with a keycard.

Think of it as someone slipping through a door, you are holding open, without having their own key. This can be a security risk because it allows unauthorized individuals to enter restricted areas.

Below some tips to prevent tailgating:

  • Be Vigilant: Before you enter a restricted area, take a moment to check if someone is trying to follow behind you.
  • Challenge Unfamiliar Faces: If you notice someone following you closely without proper identification, politely challenge them or notify security.
  • Avoid Holding Doors for Strangers: It may feel courteous, but holding doors open for others can allow unauthorized access.
  • Use Badge Access: Ensure everyone entering the premises uses their own badge, even if it seems inconvenient.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you notice any suspicious behavior, report it to security personnel immediately.
  • Security Awareness Training: Regularly train employees to recognize and prevent tailgating and emphasize the importance of reporting suspicious behavior.
